In an ode to the human body, Damien Blottiere transforms images, through a unique ‘cut and paste’ technique into breath-taking photographs. Much more than a photographer, his distinctive style can be described as a combination of collage and photography.

Describing his work Blottiere says: “I’ve always been interested in images. I started to play with a camera when I was very young. I was fascinated by my father’s little analogue camera which seemed so complicate to use to me at that time. Later, I started to buy fashion magazines as well as, secretly, vintage porn publications (the best way I found then to look at bodies). I was looking at them for hours. Years after, I had the chance to meet talented photographers. Looking at them working I started thinking: “this is what I really want to do!¨ But I don’t really consider myself as a photographer. I feel I make images by hands more than taking pictures.”

Blottiere studied Fashion at the Parisian Art School Duperre and was always interested in images and photography, after graduating he worked as Fashion Editor for Mixte, Purple Fashion and Dazed&Confused until he decided to devote himself entirely to photography. Playing with images, he creates a universe for the models or the objects, by building handmade sets or collages that look like flowers or surrealistic sculptures: all open windows to his childhood and own world of magical fantasy.

Recounting his working method, Blottiere explains: “I follow the skin, the clothes, the bones, the muscles, the shape of the face and body parts, all the silhouette aspects. I need to be alone and let my hands start to do their work. I try to translate or sum up what the subject told me or what I wish he could.” This beautiful film, recorded during a Dazed&Confused fashion shoot, brings to life Blottiere’s two dimensional images in a way that is ephemeral to the core.

When it comes to telling a story, two MVC 1st years: Benson and Carrie told us a good one in their uber-stylish ppt. Clearly speaking the language of Powerpoint fluently, their presentation was a pleasure to view, with a unique and idiosyncratic visual style. Well done to you both!

Silkscreen Printing Is Hard Work

Silkscreen printing really is hard work but when the results can look as great as this, it's worth it! Still in the process of refining their designs (and skills) MVC 2nd Years were busy this week preparing their final pieces for the big presentation in a couple of weeks. Keep going second years...you'll get there eventually!

Endless Transformation

Recent MVC graduate and ‘wunderkind,’ RayRay Chang exceeded all expectations when he presented his début collection Endless Transformation at Star Gallery, Taipei last week. Telling his stories through hand-shaded and dip-dyed fabrics, the patterns we see are based on traditional Chinese watercolour landscapes. Translating these ephemeral two dimensional works of art into tangible elements was no easy feat, however RayRay’s nimble fingers shredded, twisted, dyed and sewed their way to victory and a new visual language was created in the process!

Lost & Found™ Workshop Day 1

Day 1 of the Lost&Found™ Workshop, organised by The D/sign Lounge, kicked off to a great start with MVC Tutors and students equally excited to hear Media Artist and Filmmaker Scott Hessels talk about his work. Mr Hessels, the Workshop keynote Speaker and special guest, has released art and commercial projects in several different media including film, video, web, music, broadcast, print and performance, and his films and videos have shown in hundreds of international film and new media festivals, on television, and in contemporary art galleries over the past 20 years.

A keen ‘experimenter’ with the cinematic form, his recent artworks have mixed film with sensors, robotics, and alternative forms of interactivity and his current series are types of experimental cinema generating systems-players. Past pieces include movies generated through topology: ‘Mulholland Drive’, environmental data: ‘Brakelights’, data sets: ‘Celestial Mechanics’ and viewer location and movement: ‘GPSFilm’. Currently his projects are based on the theme of ‘Sustainable Cinema’ in which cinema players are powered with sustainable energy sources; and ‘The Image Mill’, Sustainable Cinema No. 1 (2010), a public sculpture that uses the force and beauty of falling water as the energy to create a moving picture, was recently presented at The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

As a Media Artist, his installations have been shown internationally and include the Museum of Modern Art, New York, CiberArt, Ars Electronica, SIGGRAPH, The ICA and Japan's Media Art Festival, as well as being included in several books on new Media Art.

After previously teaching in the Design|Media Arts department at UCLA and at the School of Art, Design and Media in Singapore's Nanyang Technological University, Scott Hessels is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong.

With inspiration such as this we eagerly await the finished Workshop projects on Friday. Watch this space!

Lost & Found™ Workshop

The D/sign Lounge is always busy, busy, busy and this is one reason why: The Lost & Found™ Workshop. Between Monday May 9th - Friday May 13th, lucky students in Chang Gung University's Media+Visual Communication Department will be participating in the Lost & Found™ Workshop organised exclusively for them by Thread Count Lab and The D/sign Lounge. The purpose? To implement the Lost & Found™ Design Philosophy which challenges the traditional boundaries between ‘old’ and ‘new’, ‘analogue’ and ‘digital.’

Superstar Media Artist and Filmmaker Scott Hessels, of 'Celestial Mechanics' fame, will be heading up the list of invited guest artists and designers, along with RCA graduate Jen-Hui Liao, whose 'Drawing Machine' is currently making a storm in London.

Tangible Interfaces Presentation

Abstracting the language of nature, this collection of work springs from the marriage between the digital and analogue worlds where the dualism between the two is challenged and loosened up. The pieces created have an emphasis on technology, process and materials, and illustrate their applications to (create) objects of sublime beauty.

Joseph Cornell

Joseph Cornell's work is intriguing and beautiful. Often challenging to understand immediately, there is always a hidden story, often based on his own life experiences and sadness. He is the master of 'assemblage' which is an artistic process in which a three-dimensional artistic composition is made from putting together found objects.

Aesop's Fables

This 1912 illustration, from Aesop's fable about 'The Hare and the Tortoise' by Arthur Rackham, is a line block printed from drawing. It is one of a multitude of interpretations, by different artists, over the years who have been inspired by the famous short stories which illustrate a particular moral to teach a lesson to children.

Mortal Engine by Chunky Move

The ‘Chunky Move’ dance Company was founded by Artistic Director Gideon Obarzanek in 1995; and Mortal Engine, their latest incarnation, which premiered at the Sydney Opera House in January 2008, is a distinct and unpredictable genre-defying dance performance. Last Friday I was invited by National Taichung Institute of Technology to present my "conversation" about creativity at their 2010 International Conference on Design Theory And Practice.
